There are three stages a person goes through while suffering from stress. Know more about them...
Alarm Stage: Look at a student's face just before he is going to give an exam. Isn't the fear and tension clearly evident? When something has just started stressing you and you feel a fight or flight kind of attitude, then you are in the alarm stage of stress. It is the start up stage which defines the first reaction to the stressor.
This stage experiences an over acting of the sympathetic nervous system wherein adrenaline and cortical increase and blood flows away from the brain to the muscles. As a result, dendrites shrink back in the brain to moderate the flow of information, slowing or closing down the nonessential body functions. The whole body starts preparing itself to fight against the reason of stress. The fear, excitement or pressure is evident on the sufferer's face.
Resistance Stage: When a child is sitting in the examination hall and writing his exam, he is bothered about completing it in time. He is making full efforts to cope with the situation and his whole body is engaged in fighting against the condition. This is the resistance stage. In this stage, the body keeps making continuous efforts to cope with stress and therefore feels run down and exhausted. The person starts feeling irritated, over reacts to minor situations and gets mentally and physically weak. Psychological, physical and behavioral changes are also clearly visible.
Exhaustion Stage: If a student is preparing for his exam and despite of every possible effort, he is not able to relate to his studies, he is bound to get stressed. The stress could reach a height where he/she may feel completely exhausted and helpless to the extent of committing suicide. This is the exhaustion stage. This stage is further divided into two phases:
Initial phase: The stress persists and due to lack of appropriate measures the person is not able to concentrate and work efficiently.
Burnout: The person is completely exhausted and drained of all energy reserves. There is a complete physical, psychological and emotional breakdown. This requires immediate attention.
There are certain medications that can help you crawl out of the situation. But, you need to identify your stressor first. You also need to practice some self help tips depending on the type of stress you are suffering from.
Stress management
In today's life stress strikes those who are unable to manage their time properly. Poor time management often leads to poor productivity at work place, college and schools, and lack of attention towards family. It in turn gives way to negative feed backs from those around. This negative response along with guilt of performing poorly results in stress.
Thus, proper time management is prerequisite to lead a smooth life free of stress and tensions. Productivity could be enhanced with the help of time management techniques. If you could do so, that would give you a sense of fulfillment. With this sense of accomplishment you are less likely to feel stressed.
Planning in advance helps a lot in managing time. A realistic goal should be set and accordingly a feasible schedule should be prepared. One must not do a lot many things at a time, it would create confusion and outcome would be bad results. Prepare a list of works in order of priority and then proceed.
If you become workaholic, you are more likely to remain stressed. It often leads to burn out. A balance in work and leisure hours would help a lot in reducing pressure. Recreation rejuvenates you, so it should be enjoyed to the fullest.
In today's busy corporate life, personal data assistant is very handy to practice time management. If you manage your time properly, you won't be required to take work at home which is often a cause of annoyance for family members. It would reduce family conflicts and in turn would create a stress free family environment. So, manage your time and enjoy life to its fullest.
The best ways to reduce stress
Stress has the solution within the word. Rest plus two syllables to spare. Yes...yes...It is a product of self-creation. For the stress, you have to mostly blame yourself. They say you are the creator of your destiny and circumstances. When you think that you are the victim of circumstances, you are under stress. In short, when you are unable to cope up with a given situation, you are under stress!
Whether the businessmen have more stress or those in service have more stress? The answer is not 'No'. Both have stress. Stress or no stress, is the manner in which you manage your life. Your response to a given situation is the indicator whether you have the stress or not! To give you an example- it may be the best orchestra of the town; but if your heart is the muffled drum, what you can do about it? How you can enjoy the vibrations of the music?
When you know the signs and understand the sources of stress, with a firm resolution, you can find a remedy for it as well. Ups and downs are common in business. It is part and parcel of its sustainability. Women businessmen have a different type of stress. They have to strike the balance between running the business and the household duties.
One of the important steps to tackle the stress is to organize your environment, and budget your time. Set a time table and work according to that schedule. You can't have more than twenty four hours in a day. Your competitors too have just that many hours. Then how they are in a more advantageous position?
Think positively. Whether unnecessary thinking and stressful living, has solved any problems? Then, why worry over a matter over which you should not worry at all?
Your habits have lot to do with your stress. Never postpone for tomorrow, what you can do and complete today. Tomorrow never comes. Today it will be too late. Do it just now.
The sold saying goes, “A stitch in time, saves nine.” What nine? I do not know. Again the wise saying goes:
“One thing at a time, and that done well,
Is a very good rule, as many can tell.”
“So if you want, to gain your way,
Work while you work, and play while you play.
That is the way to be happy and gay!”
Remember, you can't control what happens in life. You can just face the situation. On the physical side, have a regular exercising schedule. Set a goal and continuously work on it. Take enough rest, but not to the point of laziness!
